The Label Speaks

‘Asian beauty’ is difficult to define, but one knows it when one sees it. Long, silky black hair, supple skin, and a delicately nuanced sort of femininity are attributes featured in our depiction. The kanji characters on the label (美人- bijin) literally mean ‘beautiful person’ and the word is used when describing a beautiful woman.

Bryan's Comment

“Surviving twenty years in Japan’s craft beer industry requires grit. Grit is the theme of Baird Brewing’s 20th year in business. All the special techniques we’ve learned in 20 years of brewing are lovingly incorporated into the formulation and crafting of BB20 – including the GRIT!”

Bryan's Brewing Notes

Surviving twenty years in Japan’s craft beer industry requires GRIT. Grit (defined here as the persevering application of passion over time) is the theme of Baird Brewing’s 20th year in business. BB20 GRIT Ale is the liquid manifestation of this theme.

The base beer is a strongish Golden Ale in the Belgian tradition. An ample quantity (20% of extract) of Japanese korizato sugar is combined with a single base malt (floor-malted Maris Otter) to make way for a highly attenuated and crisply dry beer. Hopping is done with a light touch, incorporating only mild floral/herbal European varieties. A dry-hop dose of each of the four varieties is aimed to accentuate the soft herbal-floral aroma without adding to the bitterness. Finally, we chose to krausen at packaging with our annually brewed Cool Breeze Pils, thus stimulating a secondary fermentation and natural carbonation in package with our house Lager yeast strain.

All the special techniques we’ve learned in 20 years of brewing are lovingly incorporated into the formulation and crafting of BB20 – including the GRIT!
